Application Process

How to register and schedule your Fundamentals (FG) and Practice (PG) exams

Step-by-Step Registration Guide

01
Contact Your State Board

Reach out to the Geology Licensing Board in the state where you wish to practice. Each state sets its own qualifications, application deadlines, and forms. Review your state's checklist for educational requirements (typically a degree in geology or geosciences with specific course hours).

Find Your State Board Contact Info
02
Submit Your Application

Submit your application forms, university transcripts, and references directly to your State Board before their deadline. The Board will review your credentials to determine eligibility. If approved, the State Board will upload your candidate record to the national registration system, pre-registering you for the exam.

03
Schedule & Pay at Prometric

Once the State Board uploads your record, you will receive an automated email from Prometric (typically from registrations@isoqualitytesting.com). This email will contain instructions to log in to the Prometric candidate portal, pay the seat fee (currently $75), and schedule your exam date and location at a local Prometric computer testing center.

Examination Fees

The national examination fees are standardized, though individual state boards may charge additional local administrative or application fees:

Exam Type National Exam Fee (ASBOG) Prometric Seat Fee Total Cost per Sitting
Fundamentals of Geology (FG) $200.00 $78.00 $278.00*
Practice of Geology (PG) $250.00 $78.00 $328.00*

*Please check with your local State Board regarding state-specific application or registration fees, which are billed separately.

Rescheduling and Cancellations

Candidates can reschedule or cancel an exam up to 5 days prior to their scheduled test date for a $35.00 fee directly through the Prometric portal. In both instances, you must coordinate with your State Board to request being placed on the eligibility roster for the next scheduled offering. Cancellations made inside the 5-day window are evaluated on a case-by-case emergency basis and require supporting medical or emergency documentation.
